British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
