Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
